OKLAHOMA BOARD OF NURSING 2017 Board Member Appointment Criteria

The Governor shall appoint the Registered Nurse Board members from a list of names submitted by the Oklahoma Nurses Association and Oklahoma chapters of nationally recognized registered nurse organizations. The Governor shall appoint the Licensed Practical Nurse Board members from a list of names submitted by the Oklahoma chapters of nationally recognized nursing organizations. [59 O.S. § 567.4 C]

The Governor should make the next appointments to the Oklahoma Board of Nursing in May/June 2017 (current terms end May 31, 2017). Organizations meeting the above criteria should submit a list of names to the Governor’s office.

Qualifications for the next appointments [59 O.S. § 567.4] are as follows:

  1. One of the appointments must be employed in the field of long-term care.

  2. Registered Nurse (one appointment)

    1. Licensed in the State of Oklahoma in good standing.

    2. No less than five years of experience as a Registered Nurse.

    3. Citizen of the United States of America and a resident of Oklahoma for at least the

      previous three years.

    4. Currently engage in the practice as a Registered Nurse.

    5. Must be from the statute designated geographical districts of 3, 6, or 7 (page 2).

  3. Licensed Practical Nurse (one appointment)

    1. Licensed in the State of Oklahoma in good standing.

    2. No less than five years of experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse.

    3. Citizen of the United States of America and a resident of Oklahoma for at least the

      previous three years.

    4. Currently engaged in the practice of nursing as a Licensed Practical Nurse.

    5. Must be from the statute designated geographical districts of 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 (page 2).

C. The individuals appointed must be able to meet the time requirements for serving on the Board (page 2).

D. The individuals appointed should be aware that one of the statutory grounds for removal from the Board includes not employed in nursing for a period of twelve (12) consecutive months during the term for which the member was appointed (59 O.S. § 567.4 D.1.b.).

Geographical Districts

For the purpose of nominating, appointing or reappointing members to the Board, this state shall be divided into eight geographical districts, consisting of counties within the districts as follows:

District No. 1 - Cimarron, Texas, Beaver, Harper, Woods, Alfalfa, Grant, Kay, Ellis, Woodward, Major, Garfield, Noble, Dewey, Blaine, Kingfisher and Logan;

District No. 2 - Roger Mills, Custer, Beckham, Washita, Caddo, Greer, Kiowa, Harmon, Jackson, Comanche, Tillman and Cotton;

District No. 3 - Canadian, Grady, McClain, Garvin, Stephens, Murray, Jefferson, Carter and Love;

District No. 4 - Oklahoma;

District No. 5 - Lincoln, Okfuskee, Cleveland, Pottawatomie, Seminole, Hughes, Pontotoc, Coal, Johnston, Marshall and Bryan;

District No. 6 - Creek and Tulsa;

District No. 7 - Osage, Washington, Nowata, Craig, Ottawa, Pawnee, Payne, Rogers, Mayes and Delaware; and

District No. 8 - Wagoner, Cherokee, Adair, Okmulgee, Muskogee, Sequoyah, McIntosh, Haskell, Leflore, Pittsburg, Latimer, Atoka, Pushmataha, McCurtain and Choctaw.

Board Member Time Requirements (5 year appointment)

Attendance to New Board Member Orientation scheduled in either June or July consisting of: 3 days general orientation

1 day attendance to a Peer Assistance Committee

1 day attendance to Settlement Conferences (Informal Disposition Panel) Attendance to Board meetings/hearings held every other month (each meeting is 3 days)

Meeting days are generally Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday
Months are generally January, March, May, July, September, and November Board members report an average preparation time for Board meetings/hearings 
of 16 hours

Settlement Conferences are scheduled on 3 separate days during Board meeting months

Two Board members attend the Settlement Conferences each Board member attends 3 to 4 Settlement Conferences per year. Board members also serve on various Board Committees that meet throughout the year
